Carefully considered and effectively integrated of these components is essential. It is possible to do a lot of hard work with nothing to show.
It is very common to look at each of these components (or blocks) in isolation, without regard for the impact and inherent 'tension', losing the multiplying effect of a holistic approach.
A brief overview of what these boxes represent and how they interlink:
Strategic Intent: the over-arching big picture driver that dominates the other elements as it is usually the ultimate target/goal (e.g. looking at, say, the horizon or even beyond!).
Strategy: the shorter term goals/targets that fall within the umbrella of the strategic intent (e.g. looking to get to the next hill, which is on the way to getting to the horizon or beyond).
Tactics: the activities/tasks that will achieve the short/long term goal (e.g. walk, run, fly, etc. to get to the next hill you are aiming for).
Operational Considerations: is where reality hits the planning - issues of resources, risk, timeframes and other factors need to be addressed and managed effectively (e.g. do you have to cross a river/creek, mud pits, bogs, face wild animals, obstacles, barriers etc.)
Control: without being able to exert control, doing any and all of the above can be as meaningless as throwing a deck of cards into the air then expecting them to flutter down and form a 3 tier paper castle with pennants flying!
Measurement/KPIs: control is great, but, if you do not know which way to control the strategy, tactics and/or operational side of things you may as well be running blind. Having the ability to measure meaningful data and use it effectively is crucial.
Outcomes/Results: Regrettably, no matter how hard you try, the outcomes/results can have a mind of their own(!). All of the strategy, tactics and operational stuff means very little unless it achieves the desired results/outcomes . . .
This intuitive understanding and resultant methodology has sufficient flexibility and applicability such that it can be applied to everything from crossing the street to running a business to running a country to . . . virtually anything you can think of!
