April Tool : 3 Common but Dangerous assumptions with written communication.

When you are communicating in writing there are three (3) assumptions that are very common. This is true in everything from a simple email through to a life-or-death application, request, plan etc.

Where things go wrong:

  1. You assume they will read the document you have prepared and sent to them!

  2. You assume they will understand what they have read!

  3. You assume they will comprehend the implications of what they have read and understood!

All too often, your lovingly crafted document, email, plan, etc. ends up being filed in the container at the end of the recipient's desk (i.e. they stick it in the bin!) . . .

A question for you: What are you going to do with your next written communication so that the recipient actually reads it, understands the content and comprehends the opportunity/issue/implication?

note: understanding and comprehension are usually more important than just reading it . . .
